And if you want any more validation that 'this' is the colour to look out for in 2020, Pantone released their colour trends for Spring 2020 naming ‘Grape Compote’ or Violet as one of the colours to look out for in 2020. In jewellery that translates into Amethyst, a beautifully ‘violet’ variety of quartz. Amethyst is the most valuable quartz gemstone. Vogue says “This lavender (but still futuristic) hue might give millennial pink a run for its money and we're here for it” *.  

Amethyst is a semiprecious gemstone often used in jewellery and is the traditional birthstone for February.

The Greeks believed Amethyst could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore Amethyst amulets as protection in battle, believing that Amethysts heal people and also keeps them cool-headed! Tibetans consider Amethyst sacred to the Buddha and make prayer beads from it. In the Old World, Amethyst was considered one of the ‘Cardinal Gems’ - that it was one of the five gemstones considered precious above all others, until large deposits were found in Brazil !**   

While Amethyst is no longer a precious stone but it is still a significant semi-precious gemstone being worn by royalty to celebrities today. Come join the trend!

  • Amethyst is symbolic of piety, humility and sincerity. It has healing powers and keeps one calm (it really is a ‘cool’ stone!)
  • Amethyst is the birthstone for those born in February (gemstone for Pisces!)
  • Amethyst is deemed symbolic of 6 or 17 years of a couple’s marriage (awesome wedding anniversary gift!)
  • Prolonged exposure to bright lights can make an Amethyst fade (store away from sunlight!)
